Round 1 of the 2018/19 NI Junior Foil Series took place on 4th Nov at Hunterhouse College in South Belfast. Two BFC fencers took part, Christopher Handley and Emma Yeaman. Christopher finished 6th in the U12 Boys, while Emma took silver in the U14 girls. Round 2 takes place on 9th Dec in RBAI in Belfast.
Four BFC entrants at the Derry Open at Foyle College last weekend 18th/19th Nov. Alastair was 5th and David 7th in MF, Orla 5th and Kate 6th in WF. Full results at https://www.nifencing.com/live/do2017/.
For the first time the Open was held in the new Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena in Dublin. In the men’s foil Stephen took silver, Alastair was 5th and David 18th. Round 1 of the 2017/18 NI Junior Foil Series was held at Grosvenor Grammar School on Sat 4th Nov. There were 2 BFC fencers attending: Emma Yeaman in the U14s and Ben Davidson in the U12s. Alastair took gold in foil at the NW Open, held 21st & 22nd Oct at UUC, after tough 15-14 wins in both semi and final. He then went on next day to take bronze in epee, this time after a narrow 14-15 defeat in the semi. In the women’s foil Kate Todd took silver and Izzy MacMahon bronze, with Cece MacMahon finishing fifth. Anna Vaughan had to withdraw at the last moment due to injury. Two bronze medals for Alastair at the 2017 Souths held in Cork 23rd and 24th Sep: one in foil, one in epee. A great start to the year for Alastair in the first of the six events of the Irish National Circuit. Full results at http://www.ncif.net/soi17/.

This year’s Belfast Open was held on Sat 11th and Sun 12th of March 2017 at our venue at Sullivan Upper School in Holywood. As in previous years, it consisted of a 6 weapon senior event and a round of the NI Junior Foil Series (Round 5). This year there was a total of 143 competing, 75 senior and 68 junior fencers from all over Ireland. BFC had 8 entrants in the senior competition and 6 in the NIJFS event, results as follows.
Senior Men’s Epee: Alastair Houldsworth 14th, Gerry Boyle 21st.
Senior Men’s Foil: Alastair Houldsworth 3rd, David White 9th.
Senior Women’s Foil: Anna Vaughan 5th, Kate Todd 6th, Cece MacMahon 7th, Izzy MacMahon 8th, Alex Agar 9th.
U14 Men’s Foil: Hugo Pettet 14th.
U14 Women’s Foil: Anna Vaughan 2nd, Cece MacMahon 3rd, Madalaine Wison 11th.
U12 Woman’s Foil: Emma Yeaman 3rd, Emma White 6th.
