Three BFC fencers made made the journey to Galway for the West of Ireland Open last weekend 27 – 28 October; Peter Brown and Stephen Brown for the men’s foil on Saturday and Rachel Philpott on Sunday for the women’s foil. Peter and Stephen both fought their way through to the semis where Stephen was narrowly beaten by John Wyatt 15-14. Peter won the other semi 15-8 against Grant Couper, then went on to win the final against John 13-10. On Sunday Rachel won her semi 15-12, but lost the final to Joana Romahlo after leading part of the way. Well done all three!

On Sunday 21st October BFC fencer Finn McMullan and family travelled down to Dalkey, south of Dublin, to the Lord Killanin Trophy junior competition held by Pembroke Fencing Club. Finn qualified for the under-11 age group and won his way through to the semis, where, after a shaky start, he won 10-5. A convincing win in the final followed, also 10-5. Well done Finn!

Eight BFC fencers set off for Foyle and Londonderry College last Saturday morning to compete in the NW Open. In men’s foil Peter, Stephen, David and Conor finished 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 10th respectively, while in women’s foil Victoria, Rachel, Keziah and, in her first competition, Lea, finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 6th. In the WF final Victoria and Rachel had a close fight and at the end of normal time were tieing at 14 all! Victoria took the final point in extra time.

The British Fencing Championshipswere held in the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on 6th October. Victoria was there, one of a few NI fencers attending, and finished 20th, highest NI fencer in women’s foil. Victoria’s current standings in the UK rankings are: 13th in the WF Juniors (U20) and 19th in the WF Seniors.
Four BFC fencers travelled on 22 September for a British and European Cadet (U17) Championship round in the Bolton Arena in Manchester: Rachel and Keziah in women’s foil and Jake and Callum in the men’s foil. Keziah, Jake and Callum then also attended the London British Cadet round the following weekend in St Pauls School in central London. All four fencers gave strong performances and gained valuable experience at national and international levels.
