Last weekend, 28th and 29th August, saw the start of the new fencing season with the South of Ireland Open in Cork. Ten BFC fencers made the trip, 3 for women’s foil on the Saturday and 7 for men’s foil on Sunday.
In WF Victoria was looking to improve on her silver medal from last year, but was only narrowly beaten 15-14 in extra time in the final. Rachel took bronze, while Keziah made it to the quarter finals, both of whom, due to an unlucky draw in the tableau, were knocked out by Victoria on her way to the final.
In MF Stephen took his first senior open gold, his route to the final including a notable win over last year’s winner, Conor Nagle. Meanwhile Peter repeated his previous year’s performance with a bronze. In total BFC fencers made up 5 of the last 8 in MF, with David, Callum and Jake taking 5th, 7th and 8th. Conor finished 10th and Alastair 13th, both only denied places in the L8 by narrow 15-14 defeats. For full results go to http://www.southofirelandopen.com/home.
Overall, a great turnout and performance by BFC fencers. Well done all.
